2003 to today

From signals to software.

The engineering, teaching and research path of Md Imrul Hassan.

My path has moved from electrical engineering and teaching to wireless-network research and product software. The recurring part is the work of understanding a system, explaining it clearly, and making it more useful.

2003 · Engineering foundations

I graduated with distinction in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT). From October 2003 to March 2004, I worked as a junior programmer at Technological Services Limited.

From 2004 · Teaching at IUT

I joined IUT’s EEE department as a lecturer in 2004. I taught programming, computer fundamentals, electronics and circuits, and co-supervised microcontroller projects involving speech recognition and a learning kit. I also judged a university programming contest in 2004.

2005 · A bridge into ICT

I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in ICT at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

2006–2008 · Radio engineering

My master’s at Kyung Hee University in South Korea focused on Radio Engineering. Research on cognitive radio, multi-hop relays and wireless capacity led to publications with collaborators including Ju Bin Song and Young-il Kim.

2008–2013 · Doctoral research

At Swinburne University of Technology’s Centre for Advanced Internet Architectures, I worked with Hai L. Vu on IEEE 802.11 and DSRC for vehicle-to-vehicle safety communication. My thesis investigated how retransmission affects the behaviour of a shared broadcast channel.

From 2015 · Product software

I moved into professional software development in 2015 and joined Google in 2016. My work has included Neighbourly, Kormo Jobs, Task Mate and Google Maps.

Alongside the day job

Independent software projects, programming puzzles and creative work remain part of my life. They give me room to learn at a different pace and follow questions that do not need to become large products.
